Director of Government Relations

The Government Relations Director assists the Vice President for Government and Community Relations with government and community relations strategy, representation, and communications with a special emphasis on community and city government relations.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
· Represents the Garden at meetings with community boards, city agencies, elected officials, attends other meetings and events as necessary, and reports back to the Vice President.
· Lobby city government related to budgetary and legislative matters
· Regularly drafts correspondence and testimony for the Garden’s officers.
· Assists with planning and implementing Garden events and meetings with external stakeholders.
· Drafts minutes of meetings with community or governmental group and records public actions.
· Organizes, coordinates and/or drafts appropriate responses and follow-up to community and governmental meetings.
· Interacts with Garden Managers to formulate creative ways of representing the Garden.
· Formulates strategies for presentations, drafts and makes presentations to community groups, city and elected officials and their staff concerning the Garden’s programs and requests.
· Drafts reports and memoranda concerning the Garden’s programs, strategies and recommendations for internal and external use.
· Assist the Vice President as needed.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree required.
· Excellent written and oral communications skills required.
· A working understanding of governmental processes and procedures.
· Familiarity with city agencies, their jurisdictions and their staff.
· Experience working directly with or within city government, particularly related to City Hall budget making process, is strongly preferred.
· Experience in grant writing is preferred
· A general understanding of the elected officials at the various levels of government and current events.
· Ability to strategize and work as a team with internal and external colleagues.
· Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel.
