Federal Policy Director

The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools is currently seeking a determined and technologically savvy Federal Policy Director to join the Alliance’s federal advocacy team and help direct and implement the Alliance’s federal policy and advocacy goals. This is an exciting opportunity for a person interested in education policy looking to contribute to a growing organization having a tremendous impact on a new sector within public education and the lives of under-served students.

Responsibilities include:
Reporting to the Vice President for Federal Advocacy, the Federal Policy Director(s) will direct a portion of the Alliance’s federal advocacy efforts on behalf of public charter schools. The Director(s) will play an integral role in the Alliance’s federal advocacy efforts. Director(s) will be expected to operate independently and effectively across many issues and will have support from a Federal Policy Manager and Federal Policy Coordinator. Activities will include: representing the National Alliance and public charter schools on Capitol Hill, liaison with Departments and Agencies overseeing programs for and impacting charter schools; regularly communicating with policymakers about public charter schools; developing policy recommendations to improve federal programs impacting public charter schools, monitoring Congressional and regulatory activities; working with external contractors and other charter-related organizations, including providing updates on activities as well as regularly appearing before supporters to update them on federal activities; fulfilling requests for information and assistance, especially from State Charter School Associations; research assistance as needed; event planning assistance as needed, representing the National Alliance at public events, and working extremely closely with the Vice President for Federal Advocacy to fully maximize the federal advocacy teams’ skills; and, other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Federal education policy knowledge and an understanding of public charter schools preferred
  • At least 3 years experience working on Capitol Hill or in the Executive Branch
  • Technologically savvy
  • Strong writing skills
  • Experience with legislative tracking and bill monitoring
  • Advocacy experience preferred
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on succinctness
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and with multiple deadlines
  • Flexibility, patience, resiliency, and tenacity along with an abundance of common sense, entrepreneurial drive, and good judgment
  • Experience working with external client
  • Ability to work independently and seek additional support as needed
  • Thorough knowledge of MS-Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
